Berantevilla to Penacerrada

Last night we had a bit of a wander around Miranda de Ebro. We were staying in the old part, which needs lots of restoration work but is quite impressive.

We managed to get a taxi to the start of our trail, and in 5 minutes were battling steeply up 300 metres, with craggy limestone cliffs above us and the remains of Castle Portilla which was built on a site inhabited in the Iron Age. That was just the first of 3 big climbs.

The track sidled for a while on a lovely NZ type trail except that it was dotted with orchids and other spring flowers and herbs. It continued through beautiful beech forest.

Penacerrada still has sections of medieval walls intact and  tower gates. We stayed in an amazing casa - built above an old mill still in working order - decorated with paintings and glass art. Below was a panaderia as well - I thought I was in heaven!
